F10 opens the game menu; supported browsers also use a short Escape press for the menu and a long press to leave fullscreen.
Getting started
I’m new here. How do I start playing?
- Open Library and choose a free game, shareware release or demo. Freedoom is a free full game to start with.
- Select Add game and wait for the download to finish.
- On the game’s page, select Start game. It will also appear on Home for next time.
If a card says Import files, that edition needs files from your own copy. Choose a free release if you don’t have them.
I already own a game. How do I add it?
- Choose Import files, then Choose folder for an installed game, or Choose files for a WAD or ZIP/RAR archive.
- Check the detected game and Import as selection. A complete game should be a Base game; an add-on should be a Mod or Expansion.
- Select Import. Once it finishes, open the game and select Start game.
For games installed through Steam or GOG, choose the game’s installation folder. Keep its subfolders together.
Import says files are missing or doesn’t recognize my game. What should I do?
- Read the error for the filenames it needs. Select the whole installation folder, rather than just its EXE or one data file.
- If you selected an installer, install the game on your computer first, then import the installed folder.
- If a ZIP or RAR won’t open, extract it on your computer and use Choose folder.
Check the compatibility list for edition requirements. Choosing a different game name in the import dialog won’t convert incompatible files.
My game is in the Library, but it won’t start. How do I fix it?
- Engine not downloaded: connect to the internet and let the game’s engine download before trying again.
- Fix game files: read the message below the play button and import the missing files together with the game.
- A modded setup fails: try the base game on its own, then enable the mods one at a time in Mods.
- No playable runtime: check Not supported. Storing a game’s files does not make it playable.
If it still fails, open the game’s Actions menu (⋯), check Game logs, and choose Report issue with the error and what you tried.
Do I need an account or WADCMD+ to play?
You can add games and play locally without an account or membership. Public multiplayer is free, and you don’t need a membership to join someone else’s private room.
Choose WADCMD+ if you want features such as cloud sync or hosting private games. You still need the files for any commercial game you want to play.
Mods and game settings
How do I play a Doom mod I downloaded?
- Read the mod’s instructions to find its required game. For example, a Doom II mod needs Doom II, not Doom shareware.
- Import that base game, then import the mod’s WAD or PK3 and any required patches or resources.
- Open Mods. Add the base game and mod from Stored files to the active loadout, using their plus buttons. Follow the mod’s stated file order.
- Choose Save as new setup, give it a name, then start that setup from Home.
Launching the base game’s card plays the base game. Launch the saved setup to play with its mods.
My mod has no effect, or the graphics and levels look wrong. What should I check?
- In Mods, check that the correct base game is selected and the mod’s checkbox is enabled.
- Disable other mods and try again. If that works, add them back one at a time to find the conflict.
- Check the order: files load from top to bottom, and later files can replace earlier content. Use the arrows or drag rows to match the author’s instructions.
- Select Save changes before launching an existing setup again.
For a mod that requires GZDoom, check the engine in Game settings. Recognized GZDoom mods select UZDoom automatically; you can also select it yourself.
How do I change the difficulty or controls for one game?
Open that game or saved setup from Library and choose Game settings. Change the difficulty or controls there; the available options depend on the game. Some games keep these choices in their own menus.
Settings belong to the game or setup you opened. To reuse another game’s controls, open Copy settings, choose a compatible source, and select Copy settings. This replaces the current game’s settings.
Can I start at a particular level instead of the title screen?
Open the game’s page, choose a level in the map list, set the difficulty if available, and select Launch. To use that level every time, choose it under Game settings → Starting level.
If there’s no map list or Starting level option, start the game normally and use its own level selection or saved games. These controls aren’t available for every game.
Why did SIGIL appear after I added Doom?
Importing registered Doom or The Ultimate Doom also installs the free SIGIL I and SIGIL II campaigns as separate setups. Start either setup from Home to play it.
To play regular Doom, start the Doom game card. If you don’t want the extra setups, delete them from their own Actions menus; that keeps your Doom files and saves.
While you’re playing
How do I save my progress and continue later?
- Use the game’s own Save menu, or the toolbar’s Save game button when available.
- Next time, open the same game or setup and choose a save from its saved-games list. You can also load through the game’s own menu.
Keep using the same setup and mods when continuing. Save shortcuts differ between games, so use the visible save controls if you’re unsure. Multiplayer sessions generally can’t use single-player saves.
How do I take a screenshot and download it?
- During play, press F8, click the controller’s right stick, or use the toolbar’s Screenshot button. This also works in fullscreen.
- Open Screenshots in the launcher and select your picture.
- Use its Download PNG button to save a copy to your computer or phone.
Pictures are saved on this device, so you can return to the gallery after leaving the game. Taking one doesn’t pause play.
How do I watch a replay or save it as a video?
- Leave the game through the launcher so it can finish saving the recording.
- Open Replays, find the recording, and use Play replay.
- If Export video is available, select it, wait for processing, then choose Download MP4 or Download WebM.
Not every replay format can be exported. For a video clip, use Start recording and Stop recording in games that provide those toolbar controls. If automatic replays are missing, open WAD Commander settings → Gameplay and enable Automatic replays before starting a new game.
The touch buttons are awkward. Can I move them?
Open the game’s Game settings → Touch keys. Drag buttons where you want them, resize them, or choose a preset. Your changes save automatically.
Portrait and landscape have separate layouts, so rotate the device and adjust both. Use Reset to restore the default layout. If a game offers different touch modes, choose Touch keys to use the editable buttons.
How do I get my mouse back or open the menu in fullscreen?
Press F10 or use the toolbar’s Game menu button to open the game menu. Hold Escape to leave fullscreen; this also lets you return to the launcher’s controls.
Click the game picture to capture the mouse again. In browsers that support Keyboard Lock, a short Escape press opens the game’s menu and a long press leaves fullscreen.
The game is silent. How do I turn the sound on?
- Click or tap inside the game first. A game opened from a bookmark may need this before the browser allows audio.
- Check that the browser tab and your device aren’t muted, then check the game’s sound and music settings.
- For a DOS game that opens a sound setup program, finish that setup before playing.
If sound effects work but music doesn’t, check whether your edition needs separate music files. Include them when importing the game.
Playing with friends
How do I start a game with a friend?
- Make sure you both have the same game edition and, for a modded setup, the same mods.
- Open your game or setup. Choose Host a game, Host online, or select a map and choose Host co-op or Host deathmatch, depending on the game.
- Share the room’s invite link. Your friend can open it or find a public room in Multiplayer.
- Once your friend is connected, select Start game in the room.
Public rooms are free. Hosting a private room requires WADCMD+; joining one doesn’t. An invite link doesn’t send the game files to your friend.
I don’t see a Host button. Can this game play online?
First check that you’re online. Doom-family and Quake games offer their supported co-op or deathmatch modes. Amiga, C64, Commander Keen 1–6 and Tyrian have Host online controls.
Some games start a room from their own network menu. For example, in The Settlers II, start the game and choose Multiplayer → Create Game. A single-player-only integration won’t gain multiplayer from an invite link; UZDoom setups and Keen Dreams are examples.
My friend can’t join my room. What should we check?
- Read the room’s message about missing or mismatched files. Both players need the same edition and mod versions; renaming a file won’t make its contents match.
- For Amiga or C64, check that the disk images and system ROMs match too.
- For a private room, use its invite link and sign in with the account it was shared with, if required.
- Check that the host is still in the room, there’s a free slot, and both players are online, then retry joining.
If the files match but the connection still fails, include the room’s error message when reporting the problem.
Can I pause a multiplayer game while I take a break?
Opening a launcher window or switching tabs does not pause the game for everyone. Tell the other players before stepping away; your character may still be in danger.
Use Multiplayer room → Leave room when you’re done. If you’re hosting, warn the others first: whether play can continue after you leave depends on the game.
Offline play and your files
How do I make sure my games work without internet?
- While online, add every game you want to play and wait for its engine download to finish.
- Open Get the app or Offline status and wait for Ready offline. Use Try again if a download failed.
- If you installed the home-screen app, open it and check its offline status there too.
Before traveling, briefly disconnect and try opening the games you plan to use. Downloading new games, cloud sync and multiplayer need a connection.
My games or saves seem to have disappeared. Where should I look?
- Use the same device and browser profile where you played. A different browser or private window has separate storage.
- In Library, clear search and filters. If you use cloud sync, set the storage filter to All locations.
- Open the same game or named setup you used before and check its saved games. With cloud sync, also check that you’re signed in to the right account.
If the browser’s site data was cleared, local files and saves were removed. You can restore an existing cloud copy or reimport your game files; reimporting alone won’t recover deleted progress.
How do I continue on another computer or phone?
For games that support cloud saves, sync your progress before switching devices.
With WADCMD+, sign in to the same account on both devices. On the first device, return from the game and open Account → Cloud storage. Choose Sync now and wait for it to finish.
On the second device, open Library and sync. For an individual cloud-only game or save, choose Sync to device. If you use manual sync, open the game’s Cloud sync action on the first device and include Saved games as well as the game.
Without cloud sync, import your game on the other device to start playing there. Your local progress won’t transfer just by signing in.
More help
Where can I read the game’s manual or a mod’s instructions?
Open the game’s page and its Actions menu (⋯), then choose Documents or License & documents. For a mod, use its Info button in Mods.
If the instructions are missing, import the TXT or DOC files together with the game or mod. The document viewer can only show files that were included.
Something still isn’t working. How do I get help?
Open the affected game’s Actions menu (⋯) and choose Report issue. Describe what you clicked, what you expected, and what happened instead. Include the game edition, any mods, the error text, and whether you’re using a phone or computer.
